The article “Foreclosure Prevention Lite” seems very much like editorial because it gives out much more facts then just plan options. Just in the first paragraph, unlike “The Election Lives”, it shows facts off the bat with a hint of option in there. In “The Election Lives” the only fact given in there first paragraph was the fact that we just got done doing the polls.

The writer of ‘We’ve Got a Date’ likes to give the facts but in his own way try to give us a clear view of what his option really is when it comes to the topic of troops in Iraq. By saying things like “The good news is…” and “Luckily…” implies he thinks that both Baghdad and the Americans have agreed that it is time to start planning for a withdrawal of American troops, is a good thing and that we are lucky because Iraqis had different aspirations.

Student Government Association has reinstated the penny wars, in an attempt to collect their ultimate goal of $2020. A representative of each class has been going around during lunch collecting money from students. The last day for collections will be October 31.

The penny wars did not take place last year. According to Vanessa Casal, SGA Senior Class President, Student Government tried to hold the penny wars during United Way month, but because it was held during the same period as Homecoming, there were too many conflicts that stopped the activity.

“It is important for students to understand that the penny war is not a competition to see who has the most money,” Sophomore Class President Gabriela Lins said. “The point is to get as many pennies as you can.” Pennies donated add points to the designated class while nickels, dimes, quarters and any other type of money causes a loss in points. Students can drop money into other class bins to make that class lose points, all while still donating to the United Way, which adds a sort of excitement to giving back.

All classes, at this point, are at negative numbers according to Lexie Kingman, SGA president. Marysol Rivero, the Actives Director, confirmed scores as of October 20: seniors -68, juniors -1148, sophomores -1987 and freshmen -499.

Rivero stated that the class that buys the most homecoming tickets gets an extra 1000 points. At the end of the competition, the class with the most points gets invited to a drug awareness performance by the up-and-coming group City of God.

“This year’s penny wars have created one of Beach High’s biggest class rivalries,” stated Casal. “Many students have been participating and are excited to see who wins in the end. This is a way for the students in each class to come together for a good cause. It has also created more class spirit and pride.”
